Beneath your Compassion

Sub tuum praesidium
Beneath your Compassion
π τν σν εσπλαγχνίαν

Latin Text

Sub tuum praesidium
confugimus,
Sancta Dei Genetrix.
Nostras deprecationes ne despicias
in necessitatibus nostris,
sed a periculis cunctis
libera nos semper,
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta

English Translation

Beneath your compassion,
We take refuge, O Mother of God:
do not despise our petitions in time of trouble:
but rescue us from dangers,
only pure, only blessed one.

Greek Text

καταφεύγομεν, Θεοτόκε.
Τς μν κεσίας,
μ παρίδς ν περιστάσει,
λλ κ κινδύνων λύτρωσαι μς,
μόνη γνή, μόνη ελογημένη.

Sub tuum praesidium is the Church's Oldest Prayer to Our Lady dated to 250A.D.

  1. The proper translation into Latin of "Theotokos" is Deipara. It is the term used in the Latin translation of the Greek term in the minutes of the Council of Ephesus.
